After the communities’ appeal for help in 1998, 1,056 participatory community surveys in the 15 sub-villages revealed thousands of people living in abject poverty without basic necessities such as water, sanitation, roads, schools, health facilities, and electricity. Malnutrition and iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) were rampant, severely affecting healthy child births, brain and body development. During interviews in November 1998, over 1,000 families requested children's education as a foundation for a better future. This marked the beginning of an inspiring and productive collaboration with the most disadvantaged communities.
