Making Pumpkin Cake and Lawar while Discussing Parenting.

By: I Gede Sudarma, EMpower Program Coordinator

This first week of August was an exciting week for EBPP junior and senior high students and their parents as they participated in their 6th parent engagement meeting activities in their respective hamlets. They eagerly learnt about the local context from their parents and engaged in interactive outreach about parenting, conveyed by the Women Empowerment and Child Protection Department of Karangasem.

As usual, the activity started with local context learning, where parents shared their knowledge and experiences with their children, such as how to make pumpkin cake and lawar (mixed shredded coconut with chicken and spices). After the learning activity, they enthusiastically participated in the outreach.

The parents also shared that they are supportive of their children’s education but often struggle to take care of them, especially when their children hit puberty.

“I’m struggling to talk with my son. He doesn’t allow me to walk into his room and see his smartphone. He also refuses and asks me to stay away when I try to sit next to him to talk,” said one mother.

Ms Suradnyani, head of the Women Empowerment Division, emphasized the importance of positive parenting to ensure their children’s maximum growth. She advised not forcing children to do house chores too much, allowing them to play, limiting the duration of smartphone use, and sparing time to have conversations or small talk with their children.

Through these activities, the children and parents enjoyed their casual learning and interactive discussions, which hopefully will maintain their bonding and create positive growth and relationships between them.
