At the East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP), in keeping with National Sports Day theme, "Sport for the Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Societies" we're championing gender equality through the transformative power of sports. Our youth empowerment program is dedicated to creating positive, uplifting experiences by ensuring that girls are not just included, but celebrated in sports and inter-school competitions. It's about paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable society.
In August 2023, we proudly unveiled a new sports court in Ban Village, which quickly became a hub for mixed-gender competitions in volleyball and futsal, the community's favorite sports. What began as an ambitious dream faced initial doubts; some in the community were uncertain about girls stepping onto the playing field. But with unwavering commitment, we’ve seen a remarkable transformation. The girls now join their male peers with confidence and enthusiasm. They’re actively participating, playing ball alongside the boys during school breaks.
These mixed-gender sports activities are proving to be a powerful force for change. Not only are they breaking down gender stereotypes, but they are also empowering girls to believe in themselves and their abilities. The community is beginning to see, firsthand, the incredible potential that girls bring to the table—not just in sports, but in life. As they gain confidence, they’re making bolder decisions and embracing freedoms that were once out of reach.
Through this program, we’re not just promoting gender equality—we’re building peaceful, inclusive societies where every young person has the opportunity to shine. The growing confidence and empowerment of the girls in Ban Village are inspiring examples of how sports can create lasting, positive change.
