On 23 February, in collaborated with KISARA Bali we held a workshop on disaster response and violence prevention during disasters, attended by 20 student representatives from EBPP’s 6 schools.
During the workshop, the head of the Prevention and Preparedness Division of the National Disaster Management Authority of Karangasem Regency (BNPB Kabupaten Karangasem) shared valuable insights on disasters, including threats, vulnerabilities, capacities, and risks, as well as the 12 potential disasters that could occur in Karangasem Regency. He also provided an in-depth explanation of the stages involved in disaster prevention and mitigation.
The afternoon session focused on violence during disasters. KISARA emphasized that vulnerable groups, such as women, children, and marginalized communities, face higher risks of violence due to factors like displacement, limited resources, and the breakdown of social structures. However, violence can affect everyone, not just these vulnerable groups. Men and other individuals can also be at risk due to increased stress, the loss of social order, and competition for resources, which can lead to both perpetrating and experiencing violence. The disruption of normal gender roles and the lack of protection mechanisms make all individuals, regardless of gender, more susceptible to violence.
This is very important to prepare students to face disasters and prevent violence, helping them protect themselves and others, especially vulnerable groups.
